“Dentistry is the best profession for me….I love helping people and working with them to improve their dental health and then working with them to maintain that state for the long term. Dentistry is so quickly changing these days that it is a constant race to keep up, keep involved and incorporate only the best treatment modalities in order to provide the best care possible.”
Dr. Hunter has been involved in dentistry since high school when she had the opportunity to work with her family dentist in Dawson Creek. This experience planted the seed which initially led her to become a dental hygienist and then a few years later ultimately led her to UBC dental school where she graduated in 1983 winning the Gold Medal (the top of her class).
Patricia’s vision was to create a warm, friendly, comforting environment where patients were treated with respect and compassion. She achieved her vision when she opened the Ackroyd Dental Center in Richmond, BC in 1987.
Patricia loves practising dentistry, and loves being able to help people improve their dental health and make a positive impact on their lives. Being able to come to work each day and meet old and new friends will keep her in dentistry for many years to come.
Patricia is also passionate about keeping current through continuing dental education and by giving back to the dental community. When her practice was young she worked part-time at UBC with the Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Oral Medicine and the Department of Periodontics. She also became involved with the College of Dental Surgeons of BC, serving on various committees, working for several years as a part-time Deputy Registrar and currently as a Board member.
Dr. Hunter enjoys all areas of dentistry. Family, cosmetic, orthodontic, implant and reconstructive dentistry are included in her practice according to her patient’s needs.
She stays current by attending continuing education courses and being involved in study clubs. She has always had an interest in orthodontics and has expanded her knowledge of this through Progressive Orthodontic Seminars and more recently by gaining certification in Invisalign (using clear aligners for achieving tooth movement). She has been a member of the Richard V. Tucker Academy since 1993, an organization dedicated to excellence in Dentistry and the fine art of esthetic cast gold restorations. In 2006 she joined The Canadian Dental Implant Study Club and in 2010/2011 completed the Vancouver Maxi Course on Dental implants. This involved over 300 hours of study in implant dentistry (sponsored by the American Academy of Implant Dentistry).
Dr. Hunter has also served with the National Dental Examining Board of Canada, starting in 1997 as a clinical examiner. She was then asked to sit on their executive Board and continued in this capacity until 2008. At present she continues her involvement as a member of their examinations committee and as an examiner for their Objective Structured Exam which is given to all Canadian graduating Dental Students and which is required by all dentists for registration to practice dentistry in Canada.
In 2006 Patricia was nominated for and inducted into the American College of Dentists. This organization promotes ethics in dentistry; she also maintains memberships in the Canadian Dental Association, the British Columbia Dental Association, Omicron Kappa Upsilon, The American Academy of Implant Dentistry and the Richard V. Tucker Academy.
